The international trade in fur has been increasing every year, and now is in excess of $15 billion world-wide, which is even more than money spent on downloaded apps (Wearefur 2016). Designers are preferring to feature even more fur than ever in their collections, with an abundance of people wearing fur each year. Through these statistics, it has been seen that the market for fur has grown by 10% annually, significantly more than any other luxurious good.

The global fur industry is over $40 billion US, with sales of fur steadily increasing in the last decade. The majority of fur is sold through major auction houses:

  • Kopenhagen Fur (Denmark)
  • Saga Furs OYJ (Finland)
  • North American Fur Auctions (Canada)
  • Sojuzpushnina (Russia)
  • American Legend Cooperative (USA) (Wearefur 2016).Ā

There are over 400 internationally recognized designers today, including John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier, incorporating fur in their designs. This has increased significantly from the 1980s, when there were fewer than 50 fashion designers that included fur in their ready-to-wear collections (Kolokolnikov 2013).

Designer elitists such as Michael Kors, Jean Paul Gaultier, Jeremy Scott of Moschino have turned fur into a runway projection in the last seasons (Williams 2015). However, they, through representatives, have declined requests to address the ethical topic of fur fashion (Williams 2015).

Other designers and labels that still implement real fur into their collections include:

We have seen a influx in fur sales. Fur, once condemned to special departments, can now be sold in ready-to-wear collections sold across department stores (Williams 2015).

It has been seen that people are happy to sell and display fur fashion, but nobody wants to talk about it. FurForFashion will continue to post blogs so we can talk about it and address the issue.
